I always ask my coaching clients what advice they would give to someone that is thinking about investing in themselves or their business. I wanted to share what they had to say.
Invest in your education first before you spend thousands of dollars on fancy equipment. Your new fancy lens or camera isn’t going to make you more money, but your business education will.
“The first thing that I have told people lately when asked what camera they should get is instead of getting a camera, something used or borrow a friend’s camera, make sure you like it. If you are liking it, then the first investment you need to make is not equipment, it is learning about the business, because that’s gonna help you get the equipment that you actually want and set you up for success. I wish I had done this earlier. I wish I’d invested in a program like this before I invested in my equipment, laptop and my education. Even like my four year degree, I learned more in this three month program with you than I did in my four year arts degree. That tells you everything you need to know right there. So yeah, when people ask me, I say invest in your education first before you do anything else.”

Get on a call and talk to any potential business coaches first- get to know them and see if they are a good fit to help you with your business.
“I would have them get on a call with you and just talk to her and see. Just do it, like the money that you spend is going to come back to you. It’s never a bad idea to invest in your in your education.”

Find someone that will help you talk through tough decisions and help you make the right decision for your own business- and someone that is willing to challenge you.
“I would say if they haven’t already, consider coaching or mentoring because if you find the right person, like Karinda, who can help work through ideas that you get stuck in your own head. Or when you keep thinking the same ideas over and over until you’re kind of spinning your wheels. It’s a great way to get a fresh perspective, and really challenge you and I hate the word accountable, but help you follow through with the ideas that you work out together. So as far as investing in themselves or their business, I would say coaching or mentoring is a big one. I’m a big one for learning.”

You don’t have anything to lose except for staying where you are at- good education can pay for itself with one client.
“You don’t know until you try, right? You can sit there and do nothing and probably not go anywhere, or you can take this step and invest in yourself. I think that if you’re considering it, there’s a reason you’re considering it. Pretty much what you’re investing you’re gonna make back, even if you get one good client, you’re gonna make money. And it’s not gonna be a loss at the end of the day.”

Free education and resources only get you so far.
I asked Charlotte if it was an easy decision to take the leap and invest in her business.
“No it was not easy, I guess I’m speaking to two people. To the person that is reluctant to invest in education and invest in themselves, I would say to them, you really cannot imagine how badly you need education. To have someone holding your hand via an online course or coaching. You cannot even begin to imagine the amount of growth you would experience just by having that support network. These huge Facebook groups with a few 1000 people in them that aren’t not investing in their education, either can only take you so far. Books will only take you so far, cheap cheat sheets and courses will only take you so far. Having that solid mentorship is what is going to shave months, if not years off the growth of your business.”
